About Indiana University Bloomington

Indiana University Bloomington, more commonly referred to as simply IU Bloomington, IUB or simply IU, is a university located in Bloomington, which is the county seat of Monroe County, situated in the southern region of the US state of Indiana, with a population estimated at a number of more than 72 000 inhabitants, during the 2007 census.

The original state-issued legislative charter for IUB was granted in 1820, but construction did not begin until 2 years later. IUB first opened its doors in 1824, the first class graduating in 1830. In 1883, IU awarded its 1st PhD, and played its first intercollegiate sport, which was baseball, prefiguring its future status as a major research institution. In the same year, the university suffered significant damage, when its original campus in Seminary Square near the center of Bloomington burned to the ground. IU was rebuilt between 1884 and 1908, and today, its campus stands once again, in Bloomington’s city center.

IUB is constantly highly ranked by numerous significant magazines, being placed among the top 100 universities in the world, and 52nd in USA, by the Academic Ranking of World Universities. Time magazine named it `2001 College of the Year`, among major research universities, the university offering more then 110 academic programs which are ranked in the top 20, nationwide. USA Today name Bloomington one of the top 10 student-friendly college towns, among towns/cities with a population of less than 1 million, and due to the fact that it offers the latest in technology, it was also ranked one of the top five wired universities in America, by the Princeton Review and PC Magazine.

The athletic teams from IUB are known as the Indiana Hoosiers, who compete in the Big Ten Conference, since December 1st, 1899, the university being affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The Hoosiers have won a total of 25 national team titles, 24 NCAA titles and 1 AIAW, over the years, in 9 men’s sports and 1 women’s sport - tennis – including six straight men’s swimming & diving titles, 7 men’s soccer crowns and five titles in men’s basketball. They also won 133 NCAA individual titles, as well as 79 in men’s swimming and diving, and 31 in men’s track and field.

The list of notable IUB alumni contains resonant name such as Jeff Fettig - CEO of Whirlpool Corporation, Hoagy Carmichael - songwriter and actor, author of the songs `Stardust` and `Georgia on My Mind`, Arthur C. Mellette - former Governor of South Dakota, Carl Otto Lampland – astronomer, Mansukh C. Wani - cancer researcher, discoverer of Taxol, as well as many other great people, who have made themselves notable, in various fields, after graduation.
